Russia edge out Portugal

Alexander Kerzhakov maintained Russia’s 100 per cent record in Group F last night, with his early goal giving the home side a 1-0 win over Portugal.

Roman Shirokov’s cross found the Zenit St Petersburg striker and his low shot flew past visiting goalkeeper Rui Patricio six minutes into the game.

While Portugal dominated possession, they were unable to capitalise. Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev blocked Bruno Alves’ 15th-minute header from a corner while Nani constantly threatened on the right flank.

Russia, however, came close to doubling their lead in the 33rd minute, but Kerzhakov’s cross from the right dipped over the far corner of the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit a free kick straight at Akinfeev as Portugal remain second on six points.
