The former Celtic boss - who said in May that he wasn’t planning on returning to management in his homeland - will take up his new role from January 1 next year.

According to Norwegian publication VG, Deila will team up with Erik Espeseth, who is stepping down from his role as managing director at Stromsgodset.

Deila worked closely with Espeseth at Godset prior to joining Celtic in 2014.

Despite delivering two titles and one Scottish League Cup during his two-year stint at Parkhead, Deila came under fire towards the end of his time at Cetic after a series of underwhelming results, culminating in the Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Rangers on penalties.

Current Valerenga boss Kjetil Rekdal has struggled to deliver results, with the club currently languishing at the wrong end of the Tippeligaen. However, the former Norway international could stay on as sporting director at the Ullevaal Stadion.

Freddy dos Santos, who spent ten years at Valerenga and now works as a pundit for Norwegian channel TV2, said: “I think it’s something that has been a kind of wet dream for many in and around Valerenga, that they would get to sign Ronny Deila. It is a very positive signing for the club.”
