INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle last night received a significant boost with the capture of captain Richie Foran on a new three-and-a-half year deal.

The Irishman put pen to paper on a deal through to May 2017, meaning the 33-year-old will almost certainly see out his playing career in Inverness.

With Foran’s current contract due to expire at the end of the season, Caley Thistle feared losing the Dubliner to Hibs after manager Terry Butcher moved from the Caledonian Stadium to Easter Road last week.

Foran, who joined the Highlanders from Southend United in January 2009, said: “Inverness is a special place with a very special football club. I’m delighted to commit my future to them.

“I’ve had a marvellous four years with Caley Thistle and I’ve been made to feel very wanted.

“Now that everything is arranged I can focus on trying to help the team to have as successful a season as possible. The spirit among the players is very positive and the motivation levels are high.”

As a senior figure, Foran has been heavily involved on the coaching front since Butcher and assistant Maurice Malpas departed for Hibs. The former Motherwell man said he would be looking towards a future in coaching.

Foran said: “Duncan Shearer and Scott Kellacher are doing a wonderful job, putting together first-class training sessions and we’re all looking forward to the St Johnstone game on Saturday and beyond. In due course, I intend to study for my coaching badges but I’m enjoying my season and my target is to play well for this club for as long as I can.”

Caley Thistle chairman Kenny Cameron said: “We’re extremely pleased to have been able to secure Richie’s future with us. He is an inspirational leader on and off the park and is widely respected.”
