'Tie him down to a new contract, he's worth £5m now!' Ex-Rangers ace hails midfielder after Old Firm display

Former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has lavished praise on Ibrox midfielder Glen Kamara for his “exceptional” display in Saturday’s Old Firm win over Celtic.

The Finland international has been a fixture of Steven Gerrard’s starting lineup so far this season, and featured in a midfield three alongside Scott Arfield and Steven Davis in the 2-0 victory against the Hoops.

The 24-year-old, who returned from international duty with Finland earlier in the week, caught the eye with an accomplished and combative display in the Gers’ engine room.

And Ferguson was hugely impressed with what he saw from the former Dundee man.

Writing in his column for the Daily Record , he said: “Glen Kamara was the standout.

“How on earth was that guy only £50,000? What would you get for that now? That is the deal of the century. I was actually laughing while I was watching the game thinking what a piece of business that was. And he is only going to get better too.

“Stick another two zeros on the end of that £50,000 and you’ll not be close to what he’s worth now. It shouldn’t matter what he’s worth though – Rangers need to get him tied down on a new contract asap.

“To be honest I thought Gerrard would have gone with Ryan Jack so it was a surprise to see Kamara start. But what a performance, I thought he was exceptional against a very

good Celtic midfield of Brown, McGregor and Ntcham. He was all over the place and when he got the ball he was composed.

“I look at the midfielders Gerrard has at his disposal because that was my position. You’ve got Kamara, Jack, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo and now Bongani Zungu. Six players vying for a place in what the manager applies as a three in there.

“That means you need to be on your mettle or you don’t play. Kamara has made a big statement with his performance at Celtic Park and has done his chances of staying in there no harm.”

Kamara joined the Gers for a nominal fee in January 2019 with his contract at Dundee set to expire. He has since gone on to make 68 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side, including 13 in all competitions this season.
