Steven Gerrard says there is 'no desperation' for January signings at Rangers but he expects support from Ibrox board if he needs it

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is confident he will receive further financial backing from the club if he decides his squad requires reinforcements during the January transfer window.

With his team currently performing consistently well in both domestic and European football, Gerrard’s immediate priority is to tie down improved contracts for players such as Finnish international midfielder Glen Kamara.

But although he feels there is no urgency for Rangers to make further additions to the first team squad next month, stating there will be more in the way of departures, he won’t rule out moves for any potential targets who become available.

“I don’t think we’re in any mad rush but we’re certainly looking at certain (contract) situations with Glen and a few others,” said Gerrard. “In terms of recruitment in January, we’re at a club where we’re always looking so that never stops.

"It’s not a case of when we get close to January we think, all of a sudden, we’ve got to try and look for players to improve what we’ve got. It’s an ongoing thing. If we see something out there that works financially and that we think that can make the team stronger, that’s something we’ll look into.

"I’m really happy with where the squad is at in terms of competition for places. There’s no desperation for new signings. I’d probably predict there will be more going the other way rather than incomings. But I’ll never say never, because if something becomes available that we like and it makes sense, I do think I would get the support if we needed to do something.”
