'The season is over' - Chris Sutton weighs in on 'null and void' Scottish Premiership debate

Chris Sutton has argued that Rangers should be handed the Scottish Premiership title in the event of top tier football in Scotland being suspended.

Authorities have already made the decision to pause campaigns in all divisions below the Championship, and clubs in the second tier have been asked if they wish to continue amid increasing pressures caused by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

But Sutton has suggested that the Gers are so far ahead of Celtic in the race for the top prize that if, like last season, the campaign has to be abandoned altogether, they should be crowned champions.

Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “There's no need to talk about null and void. The season is over anyway and the SPFL would be as well handing Rangers the title right now.

“It’s done.

“There might be some debate about what to do if the Covid crisis doesn’t ease and it puts football in danger, but there really shouldn’t be.

“Neil Doncaster can’t take null and void off the table as it won’t be up to him. It will be up to the clubs to decide what to do if they worst case scenario unfolds.

“You’d like to hope lessons have been learned from last season but you’d hope it won’t get to that stage.

“It looks like the cases are coming down so as long at there’s plenty of testing and everyone sticking to the rules, there’s no reason we can’t keep on going.

“Either way Rangers are going to be champions.”
