The 24-year-old was introduced as a substitute shortly after half-time in the World Cup qualifier against Chile, which kicked off at 1.30am UK time, as Carlos Queiroz’ side snatched a 2-2 draw after fellow sub Radamel Falcao struck an injury-time equaliser.

Colombia had taken a seventh minute lead through Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma but hosts Chile turned the match on its head before half-time with a penalty from Arturo Vidal and an Alexis Sanchez strike giving them a 2-1 lead.

Former Real Madrid boss Queiroz turned to Morelos seven minutes after the break, putting his faith in the Rangers frontman first as he replaced Atalanta star Luis Muriel, although it was Galatasaray striker Falcao who provided the equaliser in the 91st minute after coming on with 18 minutes remaining.

It was the second time in three days that Morelos had made an appearance for his country having also come off the bench in the 3-0 win over Venezuela on Saturday, bringing his total number of international caps to nine.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will now hope the Colombian returns to Glasgow in good time, and in good shape ahead of the trip to Celtic Park on Saturday.

While the former Independiente Medellin and HJK forward has not hit top gear this season, he is expected to lead the blue forward line at the weekend ahead of Jermain Defoe, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten.
