Rangers forward Cedric Itten reflects on performance and says why lack of goals is no issue right now

The only thing missing from Cedric Itten's performance for Rangers at Kilmarnock on Sunday – hailed as ‘superb' by his manager Steven Gerrard – was a goal.

But while the Swiss international striker admits he is at his happiest when finding the back of the net, he insists he was content simply to play his part in the collective effort which allowed Rangers to secure the victory at Rugby Park which moved them nine points clear of Celtic at the top of the Premiership table.

“For sure, a striker always wants to score,” said Itten. “But I think it was really a team performance. It was important just to get the victory and we did. I'm so happy for the team and for everybody.”

It was only Itten’s third starting appearance for Rangers since his £2.7 million arrival in August from St Gallen, for whom he scored 20 goals last season. The 23-year-old, who netted his only two goals for the Ibrox side as a substitute in the 5-1 win over Motherwell at Fir Park in September, operated effectively and unselfishly on the right side of Rangers’ attacking trio against Kilmarnock as James Tavernier’s penalty kick was enough to claim maximum points.

"I really enjoyed it and it was really nice to play again and to get the 90 minutes,” Itten told Rangers TV. “So yeah, I enjoyed the victory with the team and we are all happy.

“I think we have a lot of confidence right now because we know we have a lot of good players. If we switch a player, there is another one coming in who will bring a good performance."
