'Not what you need' - Si Ferry claims Rangers duo may not play again this year after Covid protocol breach

Si Ferry has claimed that he wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan Jones and George Edmundson didn’t play for Rangers again this year following their suspension for breaching Coronavirus protocols.

The Ibrox duo have been ordered to self-isolate for 14 days and are likely to face disciplinary action after attending a private gathering with others from outside of their respective households.

A club statement on the matter confirmed that both players will be suspended pending an internal investigation.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, both Ferry and former Gers midfielder Barry Ferguson argued that manager Steven Gerrard will have been left disheartened by the update – especially given similar breaches involving Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic and Aberdeen, and how well his side have been performing of late.

Ferguson said: “I’m disappointed if I’m being honest. What happened a couple of months back with Aberdeen and Celtic, I would have thought a lot of the clubs would have had meetings to make sure and say, ‘Listen we need to do things by the book’.

"I don’t think it’ll be anger from the manager, I think he’ll be more disappointed. Rangers are in a real good place at this moment in time. What the boys have done, for me, is just silly.

"I don’t think they should be thrown under a bus, if I'm being honest with you – everybody makes mistakes – but I’m sure the club will discipline them, and hopefully the two of them will learn their lesson and they’ll have a future for Rangers.”

Responding to Ferguson, Ferry said: “It’s quite silly, isn’t it? Nine points clear, everything is going really well, the last thing you want is something like this.

"It wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t see either of them play again this year – I think Steven Gerrard will be that disappointed.

"You’re on such a high after that game – you go away to Kilmarnock, get three points, and this comes out on Monday. It’s not what you need.”

Neither Jones or Edmundson made Gerrard’s match day squad for the 1-0 win over Killie at Rugby Park on Sunday afternoon.
