Green has outlined his aspirations for the move, which would include the establishment of training academies, and a source from which new players would be recruited for the senior squad.

In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Green said he was convinced of the potential of football in China.

“A few weeks ago I had a very rich Chinese man here,” said Green.

“He said, ‘Charles, we are a country of £1.3 billion people but we can’t find 11 footballers among them. How can that be?’”

Previous owner Craig Whyte had made a similar attempt to tap into the Indian market by drafting in triallists from India and holding talks with officials from the Indian Premier League, but the move proved unsuccessful.

Green added that Rangers were the “strongest club in Scotland”, having rid themselves of debts accumulated by the now-liquidated oldco.

“Today we are the strongest club in Scotland. We have the biggest fanbase, no debts, no loans, no overdraft and money in the bank.

“Rangers are among the 15 most famous clubs in the world. We have the product, the names and the brand.”
