Rangers add Greek defender Argyriou to squad

RANGERS sealed their seventh summer signing yesterday when they confirmed a deal for the Greek defender Anestis Argyriou.

Argyriou, 24, can play at centre back or a right back and will go straight into the squad for today’s Irn-Bru Third Division match at
Berwick Rangers.

The player, who has spent the last two weeks on trial at Murray Park, has received international clearance and completed a medical before signing a two-year contract.

Argyriou spent the last two seasons with AEK Athens, where he made 11 league appearances, and previously played for Panathinaikos. He has seven Greece under-21 caps.

He becomes manager Ally McCoist’s seventh capture following the signings of Ian Black, Dean Shiels, Fran Sandaza, Emilson, Kevin Kyle and Sebastien Faure.

On the way out of Ibrox is midfielder Maurice Edu, who yesterday agreed personal terms with Stoke City. The English Premier League club said in a statement: “The transfer is now subject to Edu passing a medical over the weekend and then being granted a work permit.”
