McCoist, 55, spent two seasons with Sunderland during his playing days and has indicated an interest in succeeding Grayson, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Currently a pundit for BT Sports, former Rangers boss McCoist hasn’t had a management gig since leaving Ibrox in 2014.

Sunderland have won just once in their 15 Championship fixtures so far and are facing the ignominy of consecutive relegations, having dropped out of the top flight last year.

Derek McInnes, wanted by Rangers to succeed Pedro Caixinha, turned down Sunderland during the summer before the appointment of Grayson.

Former Sunderland boss Peter Reid is one of the frontrunners for the vacancy along with former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka.
