Whyte said that his RFC Group, through which he bought the club and paid off its £18m debt to the Lloyds Banking Group, held a security over assets sold to Mr Green for £5.5m earlier in the year.

He told The Herald newspaper: “Everyone knows there was a security there. All these things are being dealt with.”

If valid, this security will grant him fist access to any funds remaining from the company’s liquidation.

Duff & Phelps, the administrators of the company’s disassembly, have reported £2.3m of funds remaining and estimated a further £2.8m in outstanding assets in the form of transfer fees.

Uefa is also being asked to pay an unknown figure for the participation of Rangers players in games played by their national sides.

In the report, published in July, Duff & Phelps denied the notion that Whyte and his company were owed anything.

Ticketus, the London ticket agency to whom Whyte sold Rangers season ticket rights, remain in pursuit of the £20m paid to the RFC Group in order to fund its takeover of the club.

Whyte broke his silence this week to make a series of claims in a BBC Scotland interview which have angered the Ibrox club’s current chief executive and administrators Duff & Phelps.

When asked how much he had made out of his involvement with Rangers, Whyte refused to answer.
