Berwick enter Scottish Cup draw

Berwick Rangers will join up with 14 Highland League, five East of Scotland, three Juniors, two South of Scotland, one amateur and all nine of their Third Division opponents, including Rangers, as one of the 35 teams in today’s draw for the second round of the William Hill Scottish Cup.

The draw will be made in Glasgow at 2pm today by former Berwick schoolboy and England international Trevor Steven.

Scottish FA President Campbell Ogilvie will be joined by Steven and Tony Kenny, head of sponsorship PR at William Hill, in conducting the draw.

The 18 ties that made up Saturday’s first round produced 15 winners, from Golspie in the north to Kirkcudbright in the south, with six teams possibly having a huge incentive to win their replays this Saturday.

Coldstream were knocked out in a 4-0 defeat away to Fraserburgh, with Ryan Christie, Mark Cowie, Scott Barbour and Graham Johnston on target for the hosts at Bellsea Park. Only three East of Scotland League clubs, Selkirk, Vale of Leithen and Civil Service Strollers, made it through.

Two clubs marked their debut in the competition with victories and the intriguing prospect of former Inverness and Aberdeen manager Steve Paterson facing Rangers could happen after his Formartine United side defeated Brora Rangers 3-2.

Hamish Munro hit an early double with Dan Park adding a third before half-time, and goals from Steven Mackay and Craig Campbell were not enough for Brora to force a replay.

Turriff United won their first ever tie in style with a 6-1 home success over Burntisland Shipyard with Paul Campbell and Gary Harris grabbing two goals each and Ross Anderson along with Stephen Gauld also netting. Deveronvale ruined Hermes’ initial bow by winning 4-1 with Scott Fraser scoring twice, Graeme Watt and Kris Duncan netting and Keith Wilson countering for the Juniors.

Amateurs Golspie Sutherland made the over-500-mile round trip to Hawick Royal Albert worthwhile with Ronnie Jones a double goalscorer in their 4-2 success, while Inverurie enjoyed their journey home from Whitehill Welfare after a similar success with Andy Bagshaw opening the scoring and Stuart McKay easing them through after the Rosewell side threatened a comeback.

Former Rangers and St Mirren player Tom Brighton hit a hat-trick as Irvine Meadow beat Gala Fairydean 4-0, with Civil Service Strollers defeating Newton Stewart by the same scoreline, Stewart O’Neill scoring a double.

Both Edinburgh and Glasgow University were knocked out with St Cuthbert Wanderers’ Colin Carnochan’s goal being decisive in a 2-1 capital success and Selkirk winning 2-0 against the Glasgow scholars, with David Battle and Aaron Butters scoring.

Spartans will not enjoy a cup run after losing 2-0 to Wick Academy with Grant Steven and Lukasz Geruzel netting and Preston Athletic also went out to Highland League opposition with Conor Gethins scoring both Nairn’s goals in their 2-0 success.

Bonnyrigg defeated fellow Juniors Girvan 2-1 with one-time Celtic striker Paul Shields and ex-Norwich City youngster Kris Renton netting for Rose, while Clachnacuddin defeated 
Lossiemouth by the same score with midfielder Blair Lawrie hitting the winner.

Vale of Leithen’s Danny Noon scored as hosts Threave Rovers were defeated 1-0 to complete the list of teams that are already through.

Huntly will make a 550 mile round trip after drawing 2-2 with Wigtown & Bladnoch, however after trailing to Rob Jamieson and Jamie McHarrie goals they will be delighted that Barry Somers’ double secured the long journey.

Edinburgh City’s Paul Devlin hit a late equaliser in a 1-1 tie with Shotts Bon Accord with Buckie Thistle and Rothes also meeting again after a goalless draw.
