Rumours yesterday had Wallace the subject of a supposed £800,000 bid from the south coast outfit, who are now managed by former Liverpool defender Sami Hyppia.

McCoist has since dismissed such talk, reiterating the stance Rangers took when they refused a bid for the player from Nottingham Forest back in January.

“We’ve had no contact from Brighton and I don’t expect him to go,” said McCoist.

“Lee is a very important player to us.

“I would be hopeful as manager of the club that we can keep our best players, and Lee certainly falls into that category.”

Wallace is expected to be in the Rangers squad when they take on Falkirk on Friday night.
