Newcastle United have been linked with a shock return for James Tavernier, who has been tipped to leave Rangers in the summer.

The right-back came through the Magpies' youth ranks, spending six years at St James’ Park, but made just two Premier League appearances amid a raft of loan spells.

But now reports claim Steve Bruce could make a move for the Ibrox captain. The Shields Gazette claims the 28-year-old is likely to leave Rangers in the summer and could cost just £4 million.

West Brom and Villa circling?

However, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa are also understood to be monitoring Tavernier’s situation, while Crystal Palace were said to be keen last summer.

Newcastle currently have four right-backs on their books in Emil Krafth, Valentino Lazaro, Javier Manquillo and DeAndre Yedlin, but Lazaro and Manquillo have been tipped to leave the north-east in the summer.

Tavernier has played more than 240 games for Rangers, scoring 46 goals and notching 73 assists, but has come under fire this season from sections of the Light Blues support – most recently for his comments in the matchday programme ahead of a 1-0 loss to Hamilton at Ibrox.
