International striker heavily linked with Rangers last summer released by club

Daniel Sturridge was former team-mate of boss Steven Gerrard

Daniel Sturridge has been released from his contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor after just six months, the club have announced.

The former Liverpool striker, and Anfield team-mate of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, agreed a three-year contract in August after letting his deal with Jurgen Klopp’s side expire.

Trabzonspor said in a short statement: "The professional contract signed between our club and professional footballer Daniel Andre Sturridge, dated 21.08.2019 and ending 31.05.2021 has been mutually terminated.

"In accordance with the termination agreement, the football player gave up all his future rights and receivables."

The 30-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Ibrox during the summer before deciding to move to the continent.

Because he was released outwith the transfer window, Sturridge would be unable to move to a British club until the summer, though he could still sign to play in a league where the window remains open.

One-half of a feared strike-partnership with Luiz Suarez that nearly carried Liverpool to a title in 2014, Sturridge has struggled with injuries and loss of form for the majority of the last six years.

He has made 26 appearances for England, but hasn’t featured since 2017.

His last goal for his country came in a World Cup 2018 qualifier against Scotland at Wembley.
