A huge season for Rangers kicks off this evening in the south of France when the Ibrox club take on Olympique Lyonnais in the Veolia Trophy.

The tournament is being played at the Groupama Stadium, home of Lyon, and also features Celtic and OGC Nice.

The Glasgow clubs will not meet each other but will each play both French sides.

The matches will be played as double-headers in front of a crowd, with as many as 5000 fans allowed into the ground after the French Government relaxed their Covid-19 restrictions.

No travelling fans will be permitted.

Tonight's Lyon v Rangers match kicks off at 7.45pm BST and will be screened live in the UK on Premier Sports, the pay-TV channel that is available on Sky and Virgin platforms, as well as online.

Rangers, who are in talks to sign South African international midfielder Bongani Zungu, could give outings to new boys Calvin Bassey and Jon McLaughlin.

Bassey, a left-side defender signed from Leicester City, scored in a bounce match against Hamilton Accies last week.

Former Hearts goalkeeper McLaughin moved to Ibrox after a spell at Sunderland.

Steven Gerrard is embarking on his third season as Rangers manager and is still seeking his first trophy. The narrative this season, from a Rangers perspective, is all about stopping Celtic's bid for ten-in-a-row.

The matches in France - Rangers take on Nice on Saturday evening in a game which will also been shown live on Premier Sports - will provide a stiff test for Gerrard's side against quality Ligue 1 opposition.

Former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele is likely to be in the Lyon squad tonight.
