How Steven Gerrard has guided Rangers to a winning run not seen since Brendan Rodgers swept into Celtic

In racking up a 12th straight Premiership victory on Saturday, Rangers put together a winning sequence not seen in the top flight since Brendan Rodgers swept into the Scottish game.

That Steven Gerrard is now overseeing the kind of form which made Celtic such a ruthlessly dominant force under his former Liverpool boss Rodgers is testament to the credibility of Rangers’ latest bid to dethrone their Old Firm rivals for the first time in a decade.

It will be a big ask of Gerrard and his players to match the run of 22 consecutive league wins managed by Celtic in Rodgers’ debut campaign of 2016-17, the last time any team was on the kind of roll Rangers are now.

But the momentum is most certainly still with Gerrard’s squad after their 1-0 success at home to Hibs. As he looks to Wednesday’s trip to St Mirren, which is followed by next Saturday’s Old Firm showdown at Ibrox, the Rangers manager is prepared for any setbacks which may come his way. But he is gratified by the response of his players to their shock exit from the Betfred Cup at St Mirren earlier this month.

“I’ve said it all along – we were not going to be perfect this season,” said Gerrard. “We did have a setback against St Mirren and that was a blow.

“But it is all about the reaction. I have been pleased with it but it is important we continue that. I will utilise the squad against St Mirren on Wednesday but there is no room for wholesale changes.”
