Former Rangers goalkeeper joins League Two side as Director of Football

Former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell has been appointed Director of Football at Annan Athletic after hanging up his boots as a player.

The 34-year-old had joined Queen’s Park in February but a combination of injury and the coronavirus pandemic prevented him from pulling on a Spiders jersey before announcing his retirement at the start of this month.

Dumfries-born Bell began his career with Annan and spent time as a youth at Queen of the South and Kilmarnock before a 15-year senior career took him to Killie, Montrose, Queen of the South, Rangers, Dundee United, Hibs, Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, and Falkirk as well as Queen’s Park.

He was capped once by Scotland in a 3-0 friendly win against 2022 World Cup qualifying opponents the Faroe Islands at Pittodrie in November 2010.

Bell will now work alongside Annan boss Peter Murphy in a bid to turn the club’s fortunes around on the pitch. The Galabankies are currently seventh in League Two, just four points above the relegation play-off spot, with one win from their last five.

Chairman Philip Jones said: “Cammy’s role at Annan will see him support the club's first team manager Peter Murphy as we look to develop the football operations and strategy throughout the club.

"We look forward to seeing the results of his efforts as we go forward as a team in these difficult times.”

Bell added: “I am delighted to be joining Annan Athletic; my hometown club, and where it all started for me.

"I am looking forward to the challenges of being Director of Football and to get working with everyone at Annan to develop all areas of the club.”
