Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was philosophical both about his team’s 1-0 loss to Rangers yesterday and the dismissal of Andrew Considine in the opening-day defeat.

The Pittodrie club’s captain was shown a straight red for lunging in on Scott Arfield four minutes from normal time and McInnes could recognise the reasons for referee Bobby Madden’s call.

“You normally receive a lot of red cards in the first couple of games of the season,” said the Pittodrie manager, who felt his team improved as the encounter wore on.

“Andy has raised his studs so you are always running the risk. I don’t think he has hurt the boy. Is that a red card ten or 15 games into the season? Who knows? But we can’t really have too much complaint given that he has raised his studs.”

One plus for McInnes was the 30-minute showing from Ryan Edmondson, the day after his arrival in a six-month loan deal from Leeds United. The 19-year-old provided the home side with a bustle they had lacked with Bruce Anderson across the first hour and of which they have been deprived with Sam Cosgrove expected to be sidelined with injury for the next two months.

“Ideally we would have got him up a bit earlier in the week,” McInnes said. “Although we didn’t get Sam’s scan result until Tuesday we feared the worst this time last week when he came off after ten minutes. We thought he had actually done his cruciate and was going to be out for the season. When we got the news it wasn’t that we were delighted.

“We wanted somebody who has been training and been in and about somebody’s first team. Obviously, half of the English clubs haven’t played since March, half of them have just knocked off. To get a club willing to give up youngsters after a prolonged season is a bit difficult.

“Ryan was one of a number of players we looked at as a potential replacement when there was a possibility of Cosgrove going to France. He is obviously a bit behind, but he does score goals at his own level, he is highly thought of at Leeds, he will be signing a new contract there in the next few weeks.

“He is young and he is raw at times, but he has got potential and he gives us something a bit different.”
