'Absolutely devastated' - BBC pundit claims Rangers 'fancied their name was on the trophy already' after St. Mirren loss

Steven Gerrard’s men were beaten for the first time this season in any competition last night, with the Buddies securing a famous 3-2 victory thanks to a stoppage time strike from Conor McCarthy.

With Celtic already out of the tournament following a loss to Ross County last month, the Gers were firm favourites to end their long wait for domestic silverware by going all the way in the League Cup this term, and Thompson has argued that some fans may have even taken their expected triumph for granted.

Speaking to BBC Sportsound, he said: “I think Rangers as a club, the supporters, will be absolutely devastated by that.

"The season they’ve been having they would have thought that they would have come here this evening and progressed into the semi-final – playing against St. Mirren in a quarter-final with the Celtic not in it, I think a lot of Rangers supporters will have fancied their name was on the trophy already.

"But Aberdeen came here in the last round and went away as losers. Tonight Rangers didn’t bring the performance levels that they’ve been bringing on a weekly basis so far this season.

"Every team is going to have a dip, and every team is going to have a game where they don’t reach their full potential, and that was Rangers this evening.

"Rangers didn’t reach their potential, but St. Mirren still had to score the goals that they did and defend the way that they did.

“It’s a huge moment for St. Mirren.”
