The midfielder has been suspended since September following a bust-up in training with team-mate Andy Halliday.

Rangers say they have now concluded disciplinary proceedings against Barton and that he must return to training at the club’s Auchenhowie base.

It is not clear if he will train with the first team or the development side, or whether he still has a future with the Ibrox side.

A statement issued by the club said: “Joey Barton has been told he will return to full-time training following the conclusion of a disciplinary procedure.

“The Auchenhowie management team will inform the player of appropriate training arrangements to which he must adhere for as long as he remains a Rangers player. Neither the club nor the player will comment further.”

Barton, 34, and his representative spent almost two hours in talks with the club last week.

The meeting was the first stage in a formal disciplinary process, which the club confirmed it had instigated this month.

Barton joined Rangers in the summer from Burnley, signing a two-year deal in July said to be worth £20,000 a week.
