Boyd suffered a groin problem during Sunday's Scottish Cup match at Hamilton and Smith today confirmed the player could be out for up to six weeks.
Smith told the Scottish Daily Express: "Boyd will undergo an operation as soon as possible.
"He will be out for up to six weeks and we will just have to cope accordingly."
Boyd now faces a race to be fit for the Old Firm clash against Celtic at Ibrox on February 28.
