Talks are said to have already taken place between the club and player. Rangers boss Mark Warburton is an admirer of the 31-year-old and will look to make him the club’s sixth summer signing.

The Croatian international starred for six years in the English Premier League, moving from Portsmouth to Tottenham in 2009 and joining up with former boss Harry Redknapp in the process.

He moved to Dynamo Kiev in 2012 but returned to English football with QPR the following year for the first of two consecutive season-long loans.

He now looks set to make another quick return to the UK having signed for the New York Cosmos earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Rangers are also said to be nearing a deal for Crystal Palace defender Adrian Mariappa after the Jamaican international was spotted meeting with Ibrox assistant David Weir.
