Rangers 1 - 1 Hamilton: Waghorn injured as Accies deny Rangers

Hamilton Accies stole Rangers' thunder on their return to the top flight by holding the Glasgow side to a draw at Ibrox.

The home side also suffered a major blow when last season’s top scorer Martyn Waghorn went down late in the second half with what looked like a serious hamstring injury.

Waghorn had earlier scored Rangers’ equaliser just after the hour mark after Ali Crawford had put Accies ahead in the first half.

Ibrox was packed to capacity for the opening league fixture of the new Scottish season and for what was Rangers’ first game in the top league since 2012.

The Championship flag was unveiled before the match and Rangers fielded new signings Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Clint Hill in their starting XI. Hamilton had former Celtic player Massimo Donati in their midfield.

And it was Accies who opened the scoring on the half-hour mark with a wonderful strike from Crawford. The striker was forced wide in the box but cut back inside despite a despairing lunge from Niko Kranjcar. He switched the ball on to his left foot and swept in a curling shot past Wes Foderingham who got fingertips to the ball but could not prevent it going in.

Accies were still ahead at half-time and it took Rangers until the 61st minute to draw level. Substitute Harry Forrester, who missed the end of last season through injury, was instrumental in the goal. His floated pass into the box was met by Waghorn who volleyed low into the net
