Morton 1 - 1 Raith Rovers: Morton rescued from Raith’s revenge

LAST week Morton knocked Raith out of the cup, this time around it was honours even on league business as both nudged themselves a little further from the drop zone.

No doubt still smarting from the result seven days previous, it was with a seemingly vengeful purpose that Raith started the match as John Baird headed narrowly wide, and Damian Casalinuovo saw his low drive turned round the post inside the first five minutes.

Morton were for long periods simply not at the races, and were lucky to still be on terms as they again looked unrecognisable from the vibrant outfit who topped the division only a few months ago. Only a half-hit Peter MacDonald attempt, and a wasteful David O’Brien hit, gave the home fans anything to get behind during an error strewn first half.

When Allan Moore’s men did carve out a clear-cut chance the sloppy finish of Archie Campbell was blocked by the frame of visiting keeper, David McGurn. Morton had instant cause to regret the missed chance when, seconds later, Rovers skipper Grant Murray sent his downward header trundling past Colin Stewart for the opener.

However, just as the game looked to be getting away from them, and with the Cappielow crowd starting to turn, Morton produced a rare moment of quality to grab a leveller, and ultimately a share of the spoils, when David O’Brien slid in to crash home Peter MacDonald’s cut back.
