Queen of the South lord it over Spartans

HOLDERs Queen of the South eased to a 4-0 win over Spartans, effectively killing off the Edinburgh Lowland League side in the first half.

They made an early breakthrough when Stephen McKenna headed home a corner by Chris Mitchell.

Derek Lyle volleyed home a second shortly afterwards after a Mitchell free kick. McKenna headed in his second and Queen of the South’s third from another Mitchell corner to give his side a 3-0 interval lead.

Kevin Holt headed the fourth from Lyle’s cross midway through the 
second half.

Airdrieonians defeated Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Academical 2-1 after coming from behind.

Visitors Hamilton took the lead at the Excelsior Stadium when Louis Longridge’s shot took a wicked deflection to beat goalkeeper Colin Stewart. The home side equalised through Willie McLaren with a shot on the turn which left Kevin Cuthbert with no chance. Nathan Blockley made it 2-1 with a diving header early in the second half.

Falkirk dominated against Clyde at Broadwood, but could not find the net in the first half. Then Blair Alston put Falkirk ahead within two minutes of the restart. Clyde equalised through Stefan McCluskey after Falkirk lost possession. It did not take long for the Bairns to go back in front, though, Conor McGrandles heading home to give his side a 2-1 win.

Alan Forrest scored a last-minute goal to give Ayr United a 2-1 win over Queen’s Park at Hampden.

Tony Quinn put Queen’s Park in front from the penalty spot after Ayr had looked the more enterprising in the early stages. Michael Moffat equalised early in the second half when he eluded the Spiders’ defence to net from close range. Alan Forrest provided a late winner for Ayr.

Peter Weatherson punished his former club as Annan beat Morton 1-0 and two late goals by Chris Aitken gave Stranraer a 4-2 win over Dumbarton.
