Queen of the South 0 - 0 Alloa Athletic

Queen of the South and Alloa Athletic fought out a goalless draw in a tense game with neither side seemingly able to shift into top gear.

The first half was played at considerable tempo, given that both sides had gone to extra time in midweek against Premiership opposition. With two fit and industrious units closing each other down, chances were relatively few and far between, but there was no lack of invention.
Alloa had the best of the chances, with Andy Kirk’s eighth-minute header from six yards matched by a fine save from Calum Antell in the home goal.

Ryan McCord also proved a nuisance but blazed over the bar after getting into a dangerous position midway through the first half.

At the other end, Michael Paton, the Doonhamers’ hero in the Scottish League Cup win over holders St Mirren, caused a few problems for the visiting defence, 
cutting in dangerously from the right wing. However, Alloa’s defence were robust.

Before the break, Kirk was again denied by Antell as the young stopper dived across goal to bundle an aggressive drive past the post.

As the second half wore on, there was little in the way of goalmouth action. Sloppy tackles and scrambling defence punctuated a game that desperately needed a goal to bring it alive.

The biggest drama in either box saw Wasps substitute Edward Ferns, only on the pitch for ten minutes, stretchered off after a heavy collision in the air with Antell, causing around five minutes of injury time to be added to a fairly torrid second period, although even that couldn’t produce a goal.
