Preview: Arsenal v Wolves - Van Persie’s record attempt in jeopardy

Arsene Wenger is considering resting Robin van Persie for today’s home game against Wolves – which could wreck the Arsenal striker’s bid to break Alan Shearer’s record for most Premier League goals in a calendar year.

Van Persie’s 2011 count is 34 – two short of Shearer. Arsenal also face QPR at Loftus Road on New Year’s Eve and would be expected to add to his tally.

But Wenger is acutely aware of Arsenal’s reliance on the Dutchman and the fact that his injury troubles over the last couple of years could return if he is forced to play too many games.

“You get his vibes, the medical vibes and you know the history with him. Then you make a decision. I rested him it in the Champions League because I thought we had enough security there and we could take a gamble,” said Wenger.
