Peterhead earn boost for play-offs

PETERHEAD gained a psychological advantage over play-off opponents Queen’s Park by winning 3-0 at Hampden but Peterhead boss Jim McInally was not getting taken in by the ease of their success.

Bryan Gilfillan’s back-post header in the first half was followed by a delicate chip from Andy Rodgers and a superb strike from Dean Cowie in the second to secure the runners up position to Rangers in style.

McInally said: “Queen’s Park had a few players out and, when we go into our two cup finals against them, they will be very different opposition.

“Finishing second is a great achievement and I do not think I have ever been involved with a team that has won eight on the bounce.”

The win also gave the Blue Toon home advantage in the second leg of their semi-final with the Spiders. Queen’s Park head coach Gardner Speirs said: “We will have a few bodies back for the Wednesday meeting, so we will move on quickly from this game and start concentrating on that one.”

Elgin failed to get the goals required to dislodge Berwick from the last remaining play-off place as they defeated East Stirling 3-2. Borough Briggs defender Jamie Duff and the Shire’s Jamie Glasgow exchanged goals early with Stuart Leslie and Paul Quinn doing likewise before half-time before Ceiran McLean popped up with a last-minute winner.

Montrose finished sixth after their 1-1 draw at Annan where Scott Johnston gave the Gable Endies the lead and Michael Daly replied.

Stirling rounded their season off with a 2-1 success at Clyde. Stefan McCluskey gave the Bully Wee the lead before Jordan White netted a penalty leveller after Iain Gray was dismissed. Ross McGeachie settled things with a low drive.
