Peterhead charge to five in a row

PETERHEAD are hitting form at the right time for the play-offs as Saturday’s 1-0 win over hosts Stirling Albion was their fifth in a row and they have now gone more than ten hours since conceding a goal.

Rory McAllister got the winner after just 11 minutes when he spun away from his marker and sent a low shot past Sam Filler. The goal sent his side into second place behind champions Rangers.

Balmoor boss Jim McInally said: “We were out of the play-offs a few weeks ago but the players have worked hard to get us back into things. When you don’t concede, you have the chance to win games.”

The hosts are now out of the play-off race and manager Greig McDonald said: “We gave things a right good go after a poor start to the season. We are already working hard for next season.”

Queen’s Park’s 4-1 defeat at Berwick, their fifth loss in six games, has seen them slip into third place. Allan Urquhart put them ahead after just four minutes, but goals by Steve Notman (2), Darren Lavery and Lee Currie turned the game for the Borderers.

The win helped Berwick dislodge Montrose from a top-four place after the Gable Endies went down 3-2 at Elgin. Terry Masson and Scott Johnstone scored for the visitors, but Paul McMullen and a double by Paul Harkins, including a hotly-contested penalty, kept the Borough Briggs side’s hopes of promotion alive.

Bottom side East Stirling lost with Ally Love hitting the winner in Annan’s 2-1 win at Ochilview after Max Wright had put the Shire ahead and David Hopkirk had levelled.
