Pearson in no mood to claim credit

DALKEITH manager Willie Pearson has heaped praise on his coaching staff after three straight wins catapulted the Midlothian side to top spot in the South Division.

“I don’t deserve any credit, it’s down to the likes of Jack Lynch and Paul McCluskey – they are doing a fantastic job,” said Pearson.

Thistle have been on a roll since bouncing back from a defeat by West Calder with a 5-0 win over Stoneyburn. They then won 4-3 at Harthill before taking over top spot on goal difference from Tranent – title favourites Fauldhouse are two points behind – thanks to a 2-1 victory at Spartans last Saturday.

“We’re doing well but want to keep our heads down and get on with our business,” added the colourful Pearson. “I still fancy Fauldhouse because they’ve got money to spend on players but we are delighted to be where we are at the moment.”

Pearson and his coaches are working with a squad of 17 players, the majority of whom have been at the club for a couple of seasons. Goalkeeper James McQueen is one of the new additions this season along with Grant Gavin, Mattie Hunter and Scott McNaughton.

“We’ve got a great bunch of boys and a great committee, too,” said Pearson. “We are getting a few more folk through the gate, which is pleasing.”

Even if his side goes on to clinch the sole promotion spot, the Dalkeith manager reckons changes need to be made to the current pyramid system in the East Region. “Mr [Tom] Johnston has some serious work to do,” said Pearson in reference to the SJFA secretary. “At this year’s East Region agm, I put forward a proposal to split our league and the Fife one but it failed to go through due to three clubs – Oakley, Penicuik and Dunbar – who voted against it.”

Tomorrow, Dalkeith are at Kirrimuir in the East of Scotland Cup, which is also due to see Musselburgh travel to Kinnoull.
