Owners’ red rag to Bluebirds fans

CARDIFF City fans are furious at plans by their Malaysian owners to break with 100 years of tradition and change their kit from blue to red and replace their Bluebird badge with a dragon.

The backers want to invest, build a new training ground and increase the stadium capacity, but, according to the Cardiff City Supporters Trust, it is all on condition the changes are made.

“We were told in no uncertain terms that this was a fait accompli,” said trust chairman Tim Hartley. “We were shown a design of the logo. Cardiff City will be playing in red, they will be wearing a dragon on their chests.” Vice-chair Tracey Marsh added: “We are not going to take this lying down.”

The Championship side have played in blue for more than 100 years but red is considered a lucky colour in parts of Asia, while the dragon appears on the Welsh national flag and is hugely symbolic in Asia.
