Newcastle Utd 2 - 1 Stoke City: Cisse in smash and grab

PAPISS Cisse dragged Newcastle nine points clear of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone with a dramatic injury-time winner to see off Stoke.

The Senegalese striker completed the comeback two minutes into stoppage time after the Potters had threatened to snatch victory at St James’ Park.

Jonathan Walters had given the visitors the lead against the run of play but Yohan Cabaye’s superb free-kick set the stage for Cisse’s last-gasp winner.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis had packed his side with big players and, in the first half, they peppered the Newcastle box with long, high balls. But while the hosts were largely untroubled, they also found it hard to penetrate a stubborn Stoke defence.

Then Cheick Tiote felled Walters with a rash challenge inside the box, with Walters himself converting the spot kick. But the Potters lead lasted barely six minutes before Cabaye stepped up to curl a free-kick in off the underside of the bar.

There was even better to come deep into injury time when substitute Sylvain Marveaux picked out Cisse in front of goal and he fired past the stranded Asmir
Begovic to snatch victory.
