The statement said: “Following a process of first and second interviews with a shortlist of initial candidates, a unanimous decision was taken by Eddie Davies, Brett Warburton and Phil Gartside.

“The club are delighted and excited to appoint Neil Lennon. He brings with him experience at the highest level and an infectious enthusiasm to take the club forward.”

The length of Lennon’s contract was not disclosed.

Bolton and former Scotland international Freedman parted company at the start of October after two years, with the Trotters propping up the Championship table.

Ex-Hibs, Celtic and West Brom manager Tony Mowbray had also been linked to the vacant post while Steve Clarke and Chris Hughton had been mentioned as possible successors.

Lennon, who led Celtic to three titles and two Scottish Cup wins in four years, left the club in May, in search of a fresh challenge.

He also masterminded the Parkhead club’s stunning win over Barcelona in the Champions League as Celtic made it to the last 16 of the competition.

Since leaving Celtic he has been linked with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad and was in the frame for the South Korea job back in July.

It is understood that the former Northern Ireland international was also on Fulham’s radar, as a potential successor to Felix Magath.
