The 24-year-old had a long spell out last season with a pelvic problem after a leg break disrupted his time at Blackpool, where he was a regular in the Championship following a big-money move from Wycombe.

But the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international proved his fitness during a training camp near Dublin over the past week.

Robinson told the club’s official website: “Charles is a player who I have worked with before. He’s a big, strong athlete who can play in a number of different defensive positions.

“He adds real pace to the back four and he’ll provide real competition for places back there. We’ve had him up to assess him over the last few weeks and he’s been outstanding, both on and off the park.”
