Higdon opened the scoring with a ninth-minute header before midfielder Nicky Law’s second-half double made sure the points were heading back to Lanarkshire.

Motherwell have had a superb season so far and look on course to clinch that coveted second spot, but Higdon, who took his tally to 22 goals for the season, has promised they will not get ahead of themselves as they approach the business end of the campaign.

He said: “We’ll keep our feet on the ground. We’re a level-headed dressing-room and will continue to take just one game at a time.

“We have a very difficult match against St Mirren next weekend which we will be focusing on 100 per cent. We’ve done well up to this stage but we have to keep it going. As the gaffer says, we haven’t achieved anything yet so we have to continue to be really focused.”

Motherwell took the lead when Chris Humphrey’s deep cross from the right took the Dundee defence by surprise as it found its way all the way to the back post and Higdon rose unchallenged to head past recently-recruited Dark Blues goalkeeper Steve Simonsen from close range.

The visitors doubled their lead midway through the second half when Keith Lasley’s flighted cross from the right was met by the on-rushing Law, who flicked a header low into Simonsen’s right-hand corner. The win was sealed ten minutes from time when Law curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner after collecting a Tom Hateley corner.

McCall could not speak highly enough of his in-form players after watching them leave Dundee trailing at the foot of the SPL and staring relegation in the face.

He said: “They’re a great group of players. They worked their socks off again for the cause which you have to do when you come to a place like Dens Park.

“This was always going to be a hard game with Dundee fighting for their lives although once we got into our stride in the second half we made life a bit easier for ourselves.

“There’s still a long way to go this season. We have got this far by playing as a team and that’s how we have to carry on.”

Dundee interim manager John Brown refused to be overly critical of his players as they suffered their first SPL defeat under his watch.

He said: “It’s a hard one. We should have defended better but I can’t be too hard on the players as this is the first time they haven’t really done themselves justice in recent weeks.

“But we’ll keep scratching for as many points as we can with the games which are left and see what happens.”
