Morton 2-2 Livingston: Spoils shared at Cappielow

AN opening-day share of the spoils at Cappielow will have sharpened the appetite of all present for the season ahead if this was a taste of things to come.

Scorers: Morton - Weatherson 5; Wallace 80; Livingston - Russell 25; Scougall 39

Despite the visitors making the more positive start, it was the much-changed hosts who took a fifth-minute lead courtesy of a thumping Peter Weatherson header. However, the lead only ever looked temporary and so it proved when former Cappielow striker Iain Russell stole away from Jason Naismith before sliding home the leveller.

Livi always looked a shade sharper, and it was a deserved lead the Lions carried into the break through Stefan Scougall’s pinpoint header five minutes from the interval.

The second half was a different story with Morton well on top as they shut down the short passing game of Livi and began to turn the screw in their search for parity.

With time starting to run away from Morton, they finally grabbed the equaliser their second half endeavours so richly warranted, although it is doubtful if Tony Wallace will ever score an easier goal, having been presented with a tap-in by visiting goalkeeper, Andy McNeil, who had made a complete hash of dealing with a shot from distance.
