Montrose told to take confidence

Montrose manager Ray Farningham is hoping that his men can take confidence from their performance in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Ayr United into tonight’s Scottish Cup third-round replay on their artificial surface at Links Park and see off the First Division Cup cup specialists.

Farningham said: “I told my players to go out and enjoy themselves down at Ayr as there was no pressure on us. They responded really well. Not much has changed in the tie, as we are still the underdogs, but we can go into the replay with a bit more confidence.”

Defender Alan Campbell remains a doubt with a groin problem, with everyone else available to Farningham.

Ayr United players have been told that they must work harder if they are to see off Montrose. Manager Brian Reid said: “I am disappointed and relieved about having a replay. I am disappointed as the players were well warned that Montrose would see us a ‘big scalp’ to take and that we would have to work as hard as we have in any game this season to get through and that did not happen.

“I am relieved that we have another bite of the cherry.”

Central defender Martyn Campbell remains out after his recent knee surgery.
