Miller: Rangers '˜can bridge gap' from promotion to champions

Rangers striker Kenny Miller has expressed complete confidence that he can bring up a personal six in a row by helping the Ibrox club claim the Premiership in their return to the top flight.

Each one of Miller’s last five seasons in the top tier – which span 16 years and includes a success at Celtic – has brought him a league winners’ medal.

The 36-year-old is bullish about adding another to prevent the Parkhead club racking up a sixth straight championship themselves.

He points to the fact that Rangers have come out on top in 2016 already against Celtic, Kilmarnock, Dundee – all in the Scottish Cup – and Motherwell in the Betfred Cup a fortnight ago – as justification for his belief.

“I don’t think anyone has shirked away from the fact that we want to win the league,” he said. “I feel we have a squad capable of it.

“There’s no doubt we’ve shown in the one-off games against Premiership opposition last season that we are more than good enough.

“We have beaten a top-six team already in the cup.

“I felt we weren’t up to speed the first 10-15 minutes but after that we were the dominant team and the chances we created in the second half were incredible.

“We could have scored even more [than two]. So we’ve beaten a top-six team already this year and there’s no doubt we are ready and prepared for the season ahead.”

Miller refused to consider it would be asking too much to expect a promoted side to instantly put themselves top of the pile in the Premiership.

“I’m confident we can bridge that gap,” he said. “All we can go on is how we are, how we work every single day and take it from there. We can look at the games we had last year against higher-level opposition and there’s no doubt we’re now in a stronger place with a stronger squad than we had then. So the competition for places is going to be great which can only be healthy for the club going forward.

“For me there’s only one aim and that’s to win the league. [At this club always] the demands are the same, the expectations are the same and it will only get greater the further you progress through the season to what will hopefully be a title come the end of it.”
