Meikle makes Cup priority over League

“As a player that’s my selfish view, though I know my fellow joint-manager, Bryan Ryrie, will probably disagree,” said the big defender.

“You hear a lot of managers talking about the league being more important, but I would go completely the opposite way. The best run I’ve had in the Scottish Cup was reaching the quarter- finals with Musselburgh.

“I’d love to get to the final with Penicuik and see the club getting all the Press coverage that would come with that. A good run in the cup generates big crowds so that helps take pressure off clubs financially.”

Meikle was speaking ahead of tomorrow’s second-round replay against Glasgow Perthshire (2.00pm kick-off).

The sides fought out a goalless draw in Glasgow last weekend and Meikle is looking for Penicuik to make home advantage count second time around, adding: “Their pitch was quite tight. Our pitch should suit us more as its bigger and should allow us to exploit the pace we’ve got in certain areas of the team.”

Meikle and Ryrie have virtually a full squad to select from, with Grant Killin the only player left on the casualty list.

Spartans also face a second-round replay tomorrow, facing a long trip to Aberdeen to take on Glentanar after that also ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Bathgate and Linlithgow, already out of the Scottish Cup, clash in the pick of the Super League games tomorrow.

Musselburgh, safely through in the cup, return to league action at St Andrews, with champions Bo’ness away at Camelon.
