Luxembourg eye '˜winnable' friendly against Scotland to boost ranking

Luxembourg are looking to arrange an international friendly with Scotland this month because they believe a win over the national team will boost their Fifa rankings.

The small nation are currently ranked 130th in the world and are winless in their last nine international fixtures, including a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands in their most recent match.

However, with one eye on rankings ahead of the 2020 European Championships qualification campaign, Luxembourg are hoping to schedule a friendly against a side they believe they can defeat, which, unsurprisingly given recent results, includes Scotland.

Manager Luc Holtz said: “We want to play friendlies against teams who are within our reach, like Scotland, Cyprus and Lithuania. In 2017, there are two or three dates for friendlies that give us the opportunity to collect ranking points.

“Therefore, we want to play teams within our reach. So we have asked these teams for a game before we play our World Cup qualifier against France in March.”

Scotland are currently 57th in the world but are expected to drop further when the new rankings are released new week.
