Leeds fans voice anger at Diouf signing

Former Rangers striker El-Hadji Diouf was booed by his own fans after signing for Leeds United.

The controversial player made a 76th minute subs’ appearance during his side’s 4-0 Capital Cup win over Shrewsbury. And a huge section of the 18,194 crowd at Elland Road jeered as he made an unexpected appearance for the Yorkshire outit.

Neil Warnock was manager of QPR when he blasted the Senegalese international following his reaction to Jamie Mackie’s broken leg during an FA Cup-tie in January last year.

The Scottish international had to endure taunts from Diouf, then with Blackburn Rovers, as he was stretchered off the field. Warnock, who has agreed a non-contract agreement with the 31-year-old, said: “For many years I have thought he is a gutter-type of boy and I was going to call him a sewer rat.

“But that might be insulting the sewer rat. I think he’s the lowest of the low.”

However, they have now settled their differences and Diouf, who spent six months on loan at Ibrox two seasons ago, may now get a chance to prove himself in the Championship.

Warnock, who took over as Leeds manager last season, said: “I will make a decision on him because if I sign him on a permanent basis I will want him to be involved against Wolves.

“We have no money at the moment, so he won’t be retiring on the wages we can offer, but he is available on a Bosman and he has genuine quality.

“He has always been a wild card and we have had our moments in the past.

“However, I have spoken to a few people and they have told me how good he is in the dressing room.”

Scottish international Ross McCormack scored one of Leeds’ four goals in their stroll against Shrewsbury.
