The Buddies boss is desperate to save his own job by getting the Paisley side back to winning ways and has promised changes to a side that has failed to register a single victory this season.

Former Aberdeen and Dundee centre-half Mair was informed during the summer that he was free to find a new club.

The 32-year-old, however, decided to stay and fight for his place and, with Marc McAusland struggling with a training-ground knock and left-back Danny Grainger suspended after being sent off in last week’s defeat by Hibernian at Easter Road, Lennon could grant him his first-team return for Monday night’s Scottish Premiership clash with Aberdeen.

The Saints manager said: “There is a lack of confidence within the group but perhaps a player coming in or even someone changing position can alter the mentality of the team. It can give them something else to think about rather than what’s happened before.

“I’ve been faithful to a good few of the players within the poor run that we have had and they have got quality.

“But sometimes the ones waiting to come in don’t feel the same pressure that the others share because they are champing at the bit to get in there and help the cause.

“Lee Mair has done terrifically well to keep himself where he is and it just shows you how quickly football evolves and he could find himself starting the game on Monday.

“Am I thinking about making changes? Yeah, there is no doubt about that. Since last Saturday’s game, I have been through six or seven permutations.”
