League Two round up: Edinburgh City record first league win

Despite remaining bottom of League Two, it was an afternoon of historic celebration for Edinburgh City who recorded their first ever victory in Scottish league football with a 1-0 triumph at Montrose.

The visitors ought to have opened the scoring late in the first half when Ouzy See fired wide from 12 yards.

City’s big moment would soon arrive though as, after Ross Allum had been tripped in the Montrose box, captain Dougie Gair stepped to convert a match-winning penalty in the 64th minute – their first success at the 12th time of asking. Montrose are second from bottom as Cowdenbeath climbed above them on goal difference after salvaging a 1-1 draw at Berwick Rangers who finished with nine men.

Greg Rutherford’s deft control and finish put Berwick ahead in the 19th minute. Then, Steven Thomson’s dismissal for deliberate handball in the box handed Cowdenbeath a spot-kick but Dean Brett’s effort was saved by Kevin Walker.

Berwick’s ill-discipline would eventually cost them as Cameron Muirhead struck a last-minute leveller with Steven Notman sent off for the hosts in a dramatic finale.

At the top of the table, Forfar Athletic extended their lead to four points courtesy of a deserved 3-0 win at Stirling Albion.

Andy Munro headed the league leaders into an early lead before second-half strikes from Gavin Swankie and David Cox sealed a comfortable three points. Their nearest challengers Elgin City lost 2-1 at Clyde who now trail the Moray side on goal difference only. David Gormley tucked home a second-minute opener for Clyde and Peter MacDonald soon headed a second.

Darryl McHardy reduced Elgin’s arrears on the hour mark.

Arbroath came from behind to win 2-1 at Annan Athletic.
