League Two round-up: Derek Riordan sparks City comeback

Forfar Athletic's lead at the top of League Two was trimmed to just three points after falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Edinburgh City who climb to eighth.

Jim Lister headed the leaders in front in the 42nd minute as the hosts looked on course for an expected victory. However, after Craig Beattie had hit the post, City notched a deserved leveller in the 76th minute when recent signing Derek Riordan found the top corner with a stunning finish.

The capital club’s comeback was complete a minute from time as Lewis Allan fired home from long range to ease their relegation worries.

Second-placed Arbroath capitalised with an unspectacular 1-0 triumph over troubled Clyde who slide to ninth spot. Mark Whatley netted the winner for Arbroath after good work by Ryan McCord in the 41st minute.

Annan Athletic leapfrogged opponents Elgin City into third spot with a hard-fought 1-0 success at Galabank.

Following a Mark Nicholson handball, David McKenna swept home the resulting penalty kick in the 19th minute to open the scoring for Annan. That proved sufficient for the Galabankies who dominated as Nathan Flanagan was denied by a heroic Cameron Mackay save.

Stirling Albion now sit fifth after an impressive 3-1 win at Montrose.

Darren Smith’s fifth minute opener gave Stirling a lead which was doubled by a Ross Kavanagh header on the hour mark. Despite having Liam Caddis sent off, Stirling extended their advantage through Connor McLaren before Kerr Hay scored a late consolation for the Gable Endies.

Gary Locke’s first match in charge at bottom side Cowdenbeath could scarcely have gone better as the Blue Brazil won 3-1 at Berwick Rangers courtesy of goals from Robbie Buchanan, Brian Ross and Kris Renton.

Locke’s side, who occupy the relegation play-off berth, are now five adrift of ninth-placed Clyde with a game in hand.
