Law backs Rhodes for record

Law played his last international game in 1974 and, although Kenny Dalglish equalled the mark ten years later, no other Scottish player has scored more than 20 goals since the Lawman hung up his boots.

“Jordan is an extremely good player,” said Law, “and he scored a phenomenal amount of goals for my old club, Huddersfield Town. I’ve only seen him play live once, when I was invited over to Huddersfield for a game against Bournemouth. Now he has gone to Blackburn and that is another step up for him.”

The 72-year-old continued: “I wasn’t surprised when he was given a start for Scotland against Australia. He scored a very good goal in that match, and that answered some of the questions about him having played most of his football in a lower league.

“The boy has also scored regularly for the under-21s, so he has done it at every level he has played at.”

Asked if he was surprised that nobody has yet overtaken his 30-goal international haul, Law replied: “I am extremely surprised, especially given the amount of games there are nowadays. When I was playing, it was three Home International games a year and a few World Cup qualifying games. That was about it.

“Eventually my record will be beaten – there’s no doubt about that. Jordan can definitely be the one if he keeps improving the way he has.

“The big thing for a striker is to keep clear of injury but  he’s a big, strong lad with a good future ahead of him.”
