Killie were initally keen on Billy Davies but have since sounded out other candidates including former Birmingham City and Blackpool manager Lee Clark and former Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper.

The one-time Motherwell midfielder Simo Valakari was also on Kilmarnock’s radar, but he last night signed an extended contract to continue as manager of the Finnish club Seinajoen Jalkapallokerho.

Born in England to a
Scottish father, former right-back Alexander won 40 caps between 2002 and 2009. His entire club career was spent in England, with Scunthorpe, Luton, Preston and Burnley.

He played into his forties and racked up over 1,000 appearances, only the second outfield player in English football to do so.
