McGhee is on a season-long loan at the Riverside Stadium, and Middlesbrough have first option to sign him next summer for a pre-agreed fee. The 19-year-old is eager to establish himself south of the Border, an ambition he has held since childhood.

After coming through the Hearts youth academy and playing first-team football for three years, he admitted his affection for the Edinburgh club will live on.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing in the English Premier League. Every young boy wants to do their best, they strive to play there,” McGhee told the Hearts website. He is to join Middlesbrough’s under-21 squad initially.

“Luckily for me this opportunity has come around and I’m really looking forward to it. I know I’m not going to play there straightaway, it’ll take time, but with some hard work and effort then I’m sure it can happen for me.

“The club [Hearts] has been great with me for the last ten years. They’ve been different class with me, all the coaching staff. Everyone I’ve had from when I came up as a youngster and they’ve made me become who I am today. I’m really grateful for that and I’m sure I’ll always keep an eye out for Hearts’ results.

“The fans have been really good, they’ve been different class with me. I thank all of them for that and I’m sure the boys in the dressing room do too. They’ve been with us all the way from relegation to where we are now, playing in Europe. Hopefully the club can keep pushing forward.”
